【英語世界】天空方為盡 有誌事竟成

平昌冬季奧運會剛結束，還記得看電視播映的項目，如溜冰，滑雪等等，運動員在雪地冰場演出高難度動作，令人歎為觀止，覺得人類能力真的可以超乎尋常，潛能無限。驚歎之餘，想到運動員艱苦訓練，令一切非凡變真實，正如英文常說的「Where there is a will, there is a way.」。當中的will是意誌，而way是方法，這句話的意思是︰如果有決心，總有辦法，就算有困難，亦可克服，達到目標。中文諺語「有誌者，事竟成」也是這個道理。隻要有決心，有意誌力，就可達成理想。

It's difficult to do the quadruple jump in figure skating, but where there's a will, there's a way. Many marvelous athletes have done it beautifully.

花樣滑冰的四周跳動作難度很高，不過隻要有決心，就能夠做到。多個優秀的選手都能夠優美地做出這個動作。

你不可以就這樣放棄。切記，有誌者，事竟成。

朋友兒子喜歡做麵包，入行不易，父母亦不贊成，但經過多年，最近終於與友人一起經營一間麵包店，所以我也相信 Where there's a will, there's a way，有誌者，事竟成。

其實人類潛能無限，我們都不知極限在哪裏，所以運動員可以不斷破紀錄，英文一句用語 The sky is the limit（隻有上天才是盡頭） 就表達這意思，天空是無窮無盡，天空是極限，亦即是沒有界限或封頂，一切都有可能。很多時用來表示人類能力無限，可以做到的難以估計。

The sky is the limit to what this young talented athlete can achieve in the future.

這年輕天才運動員將來的成就無窮，前途無可限量。

Computers can do so much today. The sky is the limit.

今天，電腦的能力無窮無盡，看不到極限。

但有時 The sky's the limit 亦可以作為輕鬆的、誇張的用語，帶點戲謔意味，表示做事無節製，不知界限。

Last weekend he was treating and the sky's the limit. His friends ordered whatever they liked and ate as much as they could.

上周末由他作東，大灑金錢，毫無節製。他的朋友盡情地點自己愛吃的美食，隨便開懷大嚼。

He doesn't care about money when he buys presents for his girlfriend. The sky's the limit.

他買禮物給女朋友時不會計較金錢，花多少無所謂，毫無節製。
